Bionaut Labs Uses Micro Robots to Fight Brain Disease

Bionaut Labs

Bionaut Labs tech

Bionaut Labs, an Israeli medtech startup founded by the people who brought Apple’s Face ID, uses microscale robots to “revolutionize” the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases and disorders. The company’s lead programs work against malignant glioma brain tumors and Dandy-Walker Syndrome (a rare pediatric neurological disorder).

And how does the firm do all of this? Well, it uses tiny robots that can be implanted in the brain called Bionauts. The Bionauts are propelled to the designated disease target using external magnetic field. The micro-robots follow safe, predetermined 3D trajectory in the body and are monitored via live imaging.

Bionauts are able to navigate a wide range of biological media and tissue types, ranging from simple Newtonian fluids to dense tumors and fibrous tissue. They offer direct wireless access to previously inaccessible deep locations in the body.

There are many different types of central nervous system (CNS) diseases, which can affect the brain, spinal cord, or both. Some of the most common CNS diseases include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, brain tumors and more.

CNS diseases can affect people of all ages, but they are more common in older adults. There is no cure for most CNS diseases, but there are treatments that can help to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life.

Founded in 2016 by two robotics entrepreneurs, Michael Shpigelmacher and Aviad Maizels, Bionaut Labs is a biotech company that boasts it is pioneering precision micro-technology with the deployment of microscale robots (Bionauts™), to remove the barriers of localized treatment and detection of diseases. Magnetic propulsion-controlled Bionauts navigate to deep locations in the human body and brain safely and precisely through non-linear 3D trajectories, making Bionaut Labs the “first to access the midbrain through previously inaccessible anatomical routes.”

Last November Bionaut Labs raised $43.2M in a Series B round of financing led by Khosla Ventures. This brought the company’s total investments to $63.2 million.
