President of Israel Isaac Herzog and Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant awarded the 2023 Israel Defense Prize – an award presented annually by the President of Israel to people and organizations who “made significant contributions to the defense of the State of Israel” – was awarded to what were described as four “remarkable projects” developed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), the Mossad, and Israeli defense industries.

The awards were presented on Tuesday by President of Israel Isaac Herzog, Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi and the Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir in a ceremony held at the President’s residence in Jerusalem.

Due to the obvious security concerns, the names and specific details of the four projects could not be revealed and neither could the names of the awardees whose images were covered in the released photos and who even had to go so far as to pose in the group photo with their backs to the camera. But no one who knows anything about Israel and the new technologies and other developments that have come out of the IDF, the Israel defense industries and Startup Nation over the years will be surprised about this. Nor will they be surprised to see the people who today could not be named becoming the new stars of the high-tech world in the near future and their projects made available to the world once they are no longer the latest classified military project.

In that respect, the people behind the 2023 Israel Defense Prize – who also, by sheer coincidence remain anonymous – said of the four awardees, “These projects have made significant contributions to the country’s security and have been instrumental in maintaining Israel’s technological and operational superiority on the battlefield.”

The awarded projects included a “cutting-edge” cyber defense system that is said to ensure the IDF’s security and operational freedom in the digital domain, an intelligence system developed by the ISA and IDF Intelligence Corps, a joint technological initiative led by the Mossad and the IDF’s Unit 8200, and the groundbreaking advancement of a classified operational capability.

The following is what was revealed about the winning projects:

1. A unique cyber defense system developed by all branches of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) including the C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate, the Air Force, Intelligence Corps, and Navy. This groundbreaking system utilizes the world’s most advanced technologies to guarantee the IDF’s security and operational freedom in the digital domain, countering both existing and emerging cyber threats.

“The projects celebrated today are truly awe-inspiring, revolutionary, and serve as a wellspring of inspiration,” he added. “They transform seemingly impossible fantasies into tangible realities. The initiatives in which you participate often resemble works of science fiction, yet they exist within the realm of actuality. This is not the stuff of dreams; it is the embodiment of our real-life accomplishments!”

Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant said, “Through endeavors such as these, we have already achieved the remarkable feat of saving lives and thwarting acts of terror. With ongoing initiatives in various stages of development, Israel consistently proves its ability to overcome evolving security challenges. These capabilities send a clear message to our adversaries that we are always prepared for any threat.”
