The government of Germany is looking to acquire Israel’s Arrow-3 missile, part of Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome missile defense system. According to Reuters, a deal is in the works that is worth 4 billion Euros ($4.3 billion).
Germany hopes to become the first foreign nation to acquire this Israeli technology and, should the deal be completed, expects to take possession of the Arrow-3 by the end of 2025.

All of this is going on against the backdrop of the continuing war in Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine more than 15 months ago, expecting a quick victory. No one anticipated more than a year of fighting and Ukraine has sustained itself with military equipment provided by NATO nations like Germany. Ukraine has even asked Israel to provide it with Iron Dome technology.
One thing is certain. If Ukraine had its own Arrow missiles at the time of the invasion then the events of the past year would have looked much different.
And with the multi-billion dollar price tag, Germany certainly expects to get something to defend itself from a similar attack. Since Russia invaded Ukraine the rest of Europe has been taking steps to defend against any possible Russian aggression in the future. The acquisition of the Arrow-3 by Germany would certainly make an impression on Moscow.
The Arrow 3 interceptor, which was developed in cooperation between Israel Aerospace Industries and the U.S., is part of the Arrow Weapon System (AWS) which is the world’s first operational, national, stand-alone ATBM (Anti Tactical Ballistic Missiles) defense system. Based on the uniquely effective Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors, the Arrow modular air defense system detects, tracks, intercepts and destroys incoming TBMs carrying a range of warheads and over a large footprint, thereby protecting strategic assets and population centers.
The innovative Arrow 3 interceptor is designed to intercept and destroy the newest, longer-range threats, especially those carrying weapons of mass destruction.
Arrow 3 integrates into the Arrow Weapon System (AWS) complementing the current and future blocks of the Arrow 2 interceptor, thus enabling upper-tier multiple engagement opportunities.
