Defense Minister Benny Gantz asserted that Iranian security personnel, in coordination with Hezbollah, had launched cyberattacks against United Nations peacekeeping operations in Lebanon.
The cyber attacks, Gantz said Wednesday at the International Cyber Conference of the Cyber Center at Tel Aviv University, were meant to steal materials related to UNIFIL’s activities and deployment for use by Hezbollah. “This is another attack by Iran and Hezbollah on the inhabitants of Lebanon and the stability of Lebanon,” he said.
According to the Defense Minister “Iran is also operating its missiles in the cyber dimension: I can reveal today that recently identified the activities of the Iranian security bodies in cooperation with Hezbollah to disrupt the activities of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon.”

UNIFIL patrols Lebanon’s southern border since 1978. It is monitoring the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel that ended the last war in 2006.
According to AP, UNIFIL said it has “not received any direct information on the alleged incident.” In a statement UNIFIL added that “the United Nations take cyber-security very seriously and have robust measures in place to protect our data.”
Benny Gantz claims “Iran’s ‘new emissaries’ are terrorists. We know who they are. We harm them and their senders, and even today, they are in our sights – not just in the cyber dimension. No attack on the citizens of Israel will be on the agenda. The responsibility lies with the attackers and the state that funds and sends them. “
“Our top mission, in the military, in the various industries and security organizations, is to build the people, train them, and keep them. The Chief of Staff and I have placed this issue as one of the main tasks in the relevant units. We are constantly examining power building regarding workforce, training, and tasks. In the coming years, we will also have to explore the organization, management, and operation of the cyber warrior, its offensive and defensive characteristics in the IDF, and the entire defense system. “
“Our cooperation with the world vis-à-vis Iran is also important in the cyber dimension. The same cooperation that we are building in the region vis-à-vis Iran in terms of defense against various threats is also expanding in the cyber dimension.”
