The Premier League Belongs to Manchester at a High Price

The Premier League belongs to Manchester. The club won four Premier League titles in the last five years, but success came at a high price

On Sunday, Manchester City claimed their sixth Premier League title following a final matchday that included far more drama than anticipated. Pep Guardiola’s squad trailed Aston Villa by two goals with 69 minutes remaining in the season, putting City’s title hopes in severe jeopardy. It took two goals from Ilkay Gündogan and a well-placed goal from Rodrigo in five frantic minutes to stop Liverpool’s push for the Premier League title. Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers also came late.

While Manchester City has dominated the Premier League for the majority of the last decade, local rival Manchester United did so for the majority of the two decades prior. The Red Devils have won a record 13 Premier League championships, with the most recent coming in 2013-the final season under the famous management of Sir Alex Ferguson. This is City’s fourth Premier League championship in the last five years and its sixth in the Premier League and Abu Dhabi.

The following chart displays which clubs have won the most Premier League championships since the league’s inception in 1992. In its 30 years of existence, the world’s most popular football (soccer) league has had just seven different winners.

The cost of Manchester City’s success was steep

This season’s Premier League winner, Manchester City, deserved to win, but it’s important to remember how the club won four Premier League titles in the last five years.
Since the Abu Dhabi United Investment Group purchased Manchester City in 2008, the club’s new leadership under chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has elevated the club from mid-table mediocrity to a global footballing powerhouse, winning six Premier League titles during the previous decade. The success of the city has always been viewed with skepticism, as it would not have been conceivable without the financial might of its Emirati owners.

According to Transfermarkt.com, a German website specializing in football transfers, Manchester City’s net transfer spending (transfer spending minus transfer proceeds) since 2008 is a staggering €1.44 billion ($1.53 billion). More than local rival Manchester United by €400 million and Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain. According to the accompanying graph, no other club in global football has spent nearly as much on transfers over the previous 14 years as Manchester City under Abu Dhabi ownership.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, Manchester United has had trouble living up to its name, even though it has spent almost as much as its local rival. That is not to diminish the city’s achievements. Observing the other Manchester clubs is sufficient evidence that money alone does not ensure success. After all, as German coaching icon, Otto Rehagel memorably stated in 1995, “money does not score goals.”
