Israeli Elbit Systems Signs $1.7 Billion Deal for Israeli Style Flight Training Program for the Greek Air Force

Israel and Greece are to sign the largest defense procurement agreement the two countries have ever had.

ELBIT Israeli-M346

Elbit Systems will establish and operate the new International Flight Training Center of Greece’s Hellenic Air Force, which will be based on the one which the company operates in Israel. The selection of the Israeli defense firm came about as part of an agreement between the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Greece’s Hellenic Ministry of National Defense.

The Hellenic Government approved the establishment and operation of the Flight Training Center by the IMOD and Elbit Systems for an amount of approximately $1.68 billion. The program calls for Elbit Systems to deliver training aircraft fleets equipped with the Company’s unique avionics and embedded training solutions, supply the Company’s flight simulators and training aids and provide through-life logistical support.

The new deal is for up to 20 years.

Elbit Systems boasts that its military pilot training solutions draws on the company’s vast experience based on its provision of aviation services, avionics, simulation and training:. These include comprehensive airborne and ground training, high availability and utilization rates, and customized advanced training avionics.

This deal can be seen as a major coups for Israel’s military and defense industries; it has managed to score such a contract with an EU member state over major European defense contractors in countries like France. Diplomatically, however, it might lead to complications with Israel’s relationship with Turkey. Turkey and Greece are no friends and Turkey is a major client of Israeli defense industries.

Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems, said: “We are honored to have been selected to provide such an important capability to the Hellenic Air Force, which we believe will contribute to the further strengthening of the bi-lateral relationship between Israel and Greece. This selection attests to the leading position we hold in the area of training, providing tested know-how and proven technologies that improve readiness while reducing costs.”
