Japan: Number of suicides over month span exceeds deaths from Coronavirus

Japan didn’t even have a lockdown. “That suggests other countries might see a similar or even bigger number of suicides in the future,” said an expert

The National Police Agency statistics in Japan show suicides rose to 2,153 in one month – October alone- and claimed the life of more than coronavirus has over the whole year. Japan’s total Covid-19 toll on Friday was 2,087, the health ministry said. According to a CBS report more than 17,000 people taking their own lives in 2020.

Coronavirus pandemic has worsened mental health issues wold over because of the unemployment, long lockdowns, and isolation from family members , and other financial concerns, and a lack of school structure.

Michiko Ueda, an associate professor at Waseda University in Tokyo, and an expert on suicides told CNN: “We didn’t even have a lockdown, and the impact of Covid is very minimal compared to other countries … but still we see this big increase in the number of suicides. That suggests other countries might see a similar or even bigger increase in the number of suicides in the future.”
