Facebook Israel has revealed the launch of the new Instagram service called Instagram Lite. The new app was developed in Facebook’s Israel offices.
Facebook Israel was established in 2013 and has grown to become Facebook’s second largest office outside of the US.

Instagram Lite will only use up about 2 MB of the memory on your phone. The full app uses up to 32 MB of memory. So in this way it follows the already existing Facebook Lite app.
Many apps use up a lot of the memory space on your smart phone. And they also use up a lot of your battery power.
This is why companies have developed the “Lite” versions of their apps.
“Instagram Lite makes it easier to bring you closer to the people and things you love,” boasts the company.
The Instagram Lite app works on all networks. It offers users the main Instagram features like connecting with friends, sharing what you’re up to, or seeing what’s new from others all over the world.
“Instagram Lite builds on the work we did for Facebook Lite in Tel Aviv. We took many of the lessons learned and technologies developed while we were creating Facebook Lite and applied them to Instagram Lite, together with our basic premise to leave no one behind,” said Tzach Hadar, Director of Product Management for Lite interfaces and Tel Aviv tech site lead.
“With Instagram Lite people around the world will enjoy a high-quality Instagram experience, no matter what device or network they are using.”
Gal Zellermayer, Software Engineering Manager, Instagram Lite, explained how the Covid-19 pandemic affected the development of Instagram Lite to reporters on a conference call.
“Covid-19 forced us to work from home and presented additional challenges and this was significant as things that we were used to doing previously, like opening a physical war room ahead of the launch of a new application could no longer be done,” he said.
“Until the pandemic, we relied on in-person meetings to do our user research; this is where we meet with groups of people who test our apps and ask them questions about their experience. We had to move these meetings virtually too and it was difficult not being able to sit next to a person and ask them to show you what issues they have or what they like about the app.”
