IAI wins $777 million Indian Navy contract for Barak8 Missile Defense

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has signed a contract worth $777 million, to supply LRSAM air and missile defense systems, the marine version of the AMD system Barak 8, to seven ships of the Indian Navy.

The contract is with India’s state-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), the main contractor in the project, the company said on Wednesday. This deal brings sales of the Barak 8 over the years to over $6 billion, IAI said.

The LRSAM system is an operational AMD system used by Israel’s navy as well as by India’s navy, air and land forces. It provides broad aerial and point defense against a wide range of threats to the marine arena from the air, sea or land. The system integrates several advanced state-of-the-art systems, such as digital radar, command and control, launchers, interceptors with modern RF seekers, data link and system-wide connectivity.

“IAI’s partnership with India dates many years back and has culminated in joint system development and production,” IAI Chief Executive Officer Nimrod Sheffer said. “India is a major market for IAI and we plan to reinforce our positioning in India, also in view of increasing competition.”

Israel’s and India have been increasing cooperation. Israel is emerging as one of India’s biggest suppliers of agriculture, advanced technologies and weapons, alongside the United States and long-term partner Russia. agriculture and advanced technologies

Last year, IAI struck a deal worth almost $2 billion to supply India’s army and navy with missile defense systems. This was followed by a $630 million contract with BEL to supply Barak 8 surface-to-air missile systems for four ships in the Indian navy.

The Barak 8 was developed in collaboration between IAI and the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Other partners in the project were Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., IAI subsidiary Elta, Indian companies BEL, BDL, and L&T and the navies of both countries.
