The body of the 65-year-old judge on the New York Court of Appeals, Sheila Abdus-Salaam, was found on Wednesday floating in Hudson River, at about 1.45pm local time, hours after she was reported missing from her home in Harlem, a police spokesman said.

Abdus-Salaam’s fully clothed body pulled from the water. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said her body showed no obvious signs of trauma or injuries indicating criminality or foul play”. “her death appeared to be a suicide”.  An autopsy would determine the cause of death, the spokesman said.

She was the first black woman and Muslim to be appointed to a seat on New York’s highest court, and the first Muslim woman to serve on the bench in the United States.
