Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony award winner Bette Midler‘s Hello, Dolly! has set box office records, with first-day receipts of more than $9 million and advance sales at about $30 million.
Midler’s performances are set to begin on March 15 at the Shubert Theatre.

Hello, Dolly! one of the most popular musicals of all time, was a 1964 musical which debuted on Broadway in 1964 with Carol Channing in the starring role. The show based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. Lyrics and music were by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart.
Five years later in 1969, it was also made into the film with a cast led by Barbara Streisand and Michael Crawford. Hello Dolly! the movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won three.
Broadway production by David Merrick run record for 37 years. Hello, Dolly! winning a record 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Broadway Buzz reported that Donna Murphy will be sharing the starring role with Midler. Murphy’s performances will begin on June 13th.
New York City Theatre reported that Midler will star alongside David Hyde Pierce. Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks, is the director and it will be choreographed by Warren Carlyle.
Page 6 reported that Bette Midler fans were surprised to see her name spelled wrong, without the last ‘e’, on the marquee at the Shubert Theatre.
A spokesperson for the theater told Page 6 that everything was now in order:
“We are quite sure there is not a soul within a 15-block radius of Shubert Alley that doesn’t know the exact proper spelling of Ms. Midler’s name. You’ll be happy to know that both ‘e’s in Bette are finally back where they belong.”
