The U.S. government is coming under fire from animal rights activists amid the Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board decition to kill more than 44, 000 wild horses and more than 1, 000 burros in an attempt to control their numbers and make room for cattle.
Last week the government board rcommended that the Bureau “sell without limitation or humanely euthanize excess horses and burros in BLM’s off-range corrals and pastures that are deemed “unadoptable.”

An “unadoptable” horse the Bureau says, “is typically at least 5 years old, making them less attractive for purchase or adoption. The bureau hasin off-range pastures and corrals.
In a statement The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) said: “The decision of the BLM advisory board to recommend the destruction of the 45, 000 wild horses currently in holding facilities is a complete abdication of responsibility for their care. The agency would not be in this situation but for their long-term mis-management. Alternatives to this proposal have been ignored for over 20 years.”
The HSUS is calling for alternative fertility control programs to slow down population growth.
