A tail of mysterious lights burst across the night sky in Nevada, Utah and across California late Wednesday. Witnesses said the balls of fire lasted about 30 seconds.
Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., told The Times that the fireball was debris from a Chinese rocket launched Last month, June 25.

McDowell dismissed the claim of a meteor shower outright, saying that meteors usually move faster and don’t carry a trail of debris.
