Last year, the number of terrorist attacks around the world fell by 13 percent, the first decrease since 2012. Nevertheless, there were a grand total of 11, 774 terrorist attacks worldwide with 28, 328 people losing their lives, according to data published by the U.S. State Department. In 2015, 19 U.S. citizens were killed as a result of terrorist incidents overseas with a further 22 injured. Amid its struggle to contain the advance of the so-called Islamic State, Iraq experienced the most terrorist attacks in 2015 with 2, 418 incidents and nearly 7, 000 fatalities recorded. There were 1, 708 in Afghanistan and 1, 009 in neighbouring Pakistan, claiming over 6, 000 lives.
The U.S. State Department also found that Iran remains the primary state sponsor of terrorism, providing a range of support, including financial, training, and equipment, to groups around the world. Syria and Sudan were also named as state sponsors of terrorism, though Cuba was removed from the list amid efforts to restore diplomatic ties.
