This week, one of the most powerful men in sports over the past 40 years will be living out a renaissance in Indianapolis.
Leigh Steinberg – the inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in “Jerry Maguire” – is back in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine for the first time in 10 years.
Not long after “Jerry Maguire” hit theaters in 1996, Steinberg’s firm and clients were gone. He went through lawsuits, bankruptcy, divorce and alcoholism – eventually writing a book about it titled “The Agent.”

“It really is a brave, new, exciting world, and my comeback is being six-years sober and having a better relationship with my kids, ” Steinberg said. “The rest is just a pleasure.”
With potentially a new movie and TV deals on the horizon, Steinberg was back in Indianapolis this week with three clients, including Memphis QB Paxton Lynch.
Steinberg told us what he’d tell his clients if they were drafted by the Colts.
“The players like being here. They like it quite a lot, ” Steinberg said. “It’s a quality organization. They’ve won before and they’ll win in the future, and they’ve got a great quarterback, so I think they’d have a great time here.”
