Turkey under ‘most intense’ cyber-attack in its history

Turkish Internet has been under a series of sustained cyber-attacks since Monday that may be the most intense in the country’s history, according to Turkey’s internet management body.

The identity of the attackers is not known but experts fear the perpetrators might be politically motivated.

According to Nic.tr, a non-government body that administers addresses for websites using the ‘.tr’ domain, the attackers are based outside Turkey. The .tr domain is used by ministries, military, banks, as well as commercial companies.

The attack has been described as a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service), in which thousands of computers are flooded with web traffic, extremely slowing down data speeds.

According to Turkish media, more than 300, 000 websites have been affected through infected servers. Some speculated the attack may have come from Russia in reaction to Turkey shooting down a Russian warplane last month on the Syrian border.

“While both the size and duration of the attack are notable, neither is unheard of, ” said Artturi Lehtio of Finland-based internet security company F-secure. “We don’t have enough information to start speculating on whether this is related to specific countries or which kind of group or single individual may be behind it, ”
