Iran has discovered an unexpectedly high reserve of uranium and plans to begin mining it shortly, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced Saturday.
In an interview with Iran’s ICANA news agency, Ali-Akbar Salehi said that Iran was sitting upon large quantities of the material, a key ingredient used in nuclear weapons.

“I cannot speak about the level of the country’s uranium mine reserves. It is noteworthy, however, that before aerial exploration [for uranium mines] we were not very hopeful. But fortunately following the [recent] explorations, the volume of deposits is promising, ” Salehi told ICANA.
