IBM-led association has leaped ahead by announcing that it has produced the world’s first functional 7nm node test chips, the most advanced commercial CPUs as of today. They are engineered using a 14nm method and there are plans for 10mm chips in 2016.
“7nm node has remained out of reach because of variety of fundamental tech barriers, ” says IBM. Samsung and the SUNY polytechnic institute, replaced silicon with a silicon-germanium (SiGe) metal for the channel transistors to enhance electron quality at that minuscule scale. It utilized Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography to print the microscopic patterns into every chip.
This isn’t the primary time that IBM has dipped below the 10nm bar with its analysis into future chip technology, the corporate demonstrated 9nm transistors engineered out of carbon nanotubes in 2012.

Once they do, IBM anticipates they’re going to provide “close to 50 % space scaling enhancements over today’s most advanced 10nm technology.”
In different angle, a processor built at 7nm is anticipated to possess double the facility density of 1 built at 10nm. it is the generation once future generation.
IBM’s announcement today could be a major milestone in its 5year, $3 billion analysis program to “push the bounds of chip technology required to satisfy the rising demands of cloud computing and large data systems.”
That’s extremely at the guts of the grand recent company’s efforts: it’s advancing producing techniques solely as a method to augment its cloud and large data services. A part of that shift was this month’s sale of IBM’s chip making unit to GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor factory that was spun off from AMD back in 2009.
GlobalFoundries could be a member of the analysis group that with success made the new 7nm node chips, and it’ll function IBM’s exclusive processor manufacturer for future 10 years. And so, when IBM exits the business of constructing chips itself, it continues to figure on planning and refinement the chips which will power our collective future.
