Israel’s daily newspaper Haaretz has revealed in plain text that the head of the United States Central Intelligence Agency John Brennan came to Israel last week, while operating under deep cover. His accompanying motorcade, complete with black SUVs, was thought to be for the musician Art Garfunkel who was also in the country for a concert there, though it is suggested this was a “blind” planted for disinformation purposes.
So why did he come, who did he talk to and what about? Deep analysis of tea leaves, which he left in the dining room of his unknown location, suggests his goal was to bring Israel more news concerning the pending nuclear deal between Iran, the United States and the other major world powers involved in ongoing negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.

One can infer that he also came to make peace — not war — between the White House, which wants to get this done, and the Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, who is worried that the Americans are being played for their naiveté. The visit comes before the June 30th deadline for the talks comes and goes. If there is no deal, the question then is what happens to sanctions relief which is on the table for the Iranians if they agree to something serious. If not, everyone worries the sanctions will collapse anyway as the Europeans badly want to prop up their ailing economies with lots of big new contracts with Iran. If their oil really starts to flow again they will have lots of cash to throw around too.
According to Haaretz, Brennan met his counterpart, Mossad chief Tamir Pardo, and other intelligence officials, as well as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. He also met his tailor, his barber and the supplier of his horoscopes, we are reliably assured by “unreliable sources.”
One of the main points of issue is still the looming disconnect between Iran’s general behaviours and their implied military threats all over the region and the prospects for their possible compliance to a nuclear deal should one finally emerge by the end of the month.
Adding to the obviou, s Brennan was interviewed on CBS News last week and stated that there is a “very, very strong relationship between United States and Israel on the intelligence, security and military fronts.”
He continued: “It’s one of the great things, I think, about our system; there can be policy differences between our governments but the intelligence and security professionals know that we have an obligation to keep our countries safe and secure” adding… “And so although there’s been great debate about the Iranian nuclear negotiations that are ongoing, the CIA, NSA and other intelligence community entities are working very close with their Israeli as well as other counterparts.”
Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office and its Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report, as did its Ministry of Housing, the Interior Ministry and – also – the Ministry of Culture which is responsible for taking care of Garfunkel this week and keeping him out of the public eye.
The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, is also a favourite tourist to Israel these days, it seems, who keeps bringing up the terrible traffic conditions on the Ayalon highway each time he comes here to meet his counterparts. Dempsey came again on Monday, and is due to hold talks with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gadi Eizenkot, according to deeply placed moles in the intelligence community – placed there of course by Paul Simon who is jealous of anything Garfunkel is up to these days; still after all these years.
