Chelsea Handler has written a touching tribute to her late mother for Mother’s Day today. This is a change of pace for the usually provocative and even offensive comic.
In an open post in The Huffington Post, Handler talked about how her mother, who died at the age of 66, was so much different than her. Handler also explained how much she owes to her mom.
“She didn’t understand how someone like her could have given birth to someone like me, ” wrote Handler. “She didn’t understand where my confidence came from, or how, at five years old, I could have an opinion about the kind of car I’d prefer to be driven in to nursery school. A coupe.”
The comedian’s mother knew that her daughter would succeed in getting everything that she wanted out of life because Chelsea would never settle for anything less and no one could ever take advantage of her.

Her mother understood enough to explain to Handler that she would never be liked by all, but would be deeply loved by those who matter. Chelsea learned from her mom to be compassionate and to be nice to people who are weaker than she is.
“She told me to be gentler with my older sister, because she wasn’t built like me; she was more sensitive, ” said Handler. “That, even though I was the youngest, my sense of self was the strongest. When I’d complain that it was my sister’s fault for not standing her ground, she would reply, wouldn’t you get out of the way if you saw you coming?’”
Handler concluded saying, “You were right. About everything. You knew me before I knew me. I’m smiling back at you. For the love, the adoration and the belief. I know now that I am my mother’s daughter. To every mother on Mother’s Day. Thank you for teaching us how to love.”
Happy Mother’s Day to All mothers from JBN.
