‘Matrix’ Producer Joel Silver Launches New Company With Canadian Entrepreneur Daryl Katz

Former ICM film finance agent Hal Sadoff to head the new venture as CEO

Veteran producer Joel Silver is partnering with Canadian entrepreneur Daryl Katz to create Silver Pictures Entertainment. Silver Pictures will develop, produce and finance movies, as well as television and digital productions. Long-time ICM film finance agent and producer Hal Sadoff will run the show as the CEO of the company.

Sadoff has been involved with more than 450 movie projects which have collectively netted well over $3.5 billion. Sadoff and Silver share a long working relationship, having partnered on a number of projects including “House on Haunted Hill, ” “Thirteen Ghosts” and “Gothika, ” featuring Halle Berry and Robert Downey Jr. Sadoff was involved in financing and production of Silver Pictures’ recent production “The Nice Guys, ” starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

Silver Pictures Entertainment brings together Silver’s life-long experience producing big budget movie with Katz’s expertise from the world of business and finance, launching a new company that aims to be a global leader in a rapidly evolving media industry.

Silver Pictures Entertainment will continue to maintain its business ties with Warner Bros., carrying on the work on several high-profile productions including the sequel of “Project X” and the third part of “Sherlock Holmes” starring Robert Downey Jr. Other movies in the series include: “Logan’s Run, ” “Ben 10” and Ross Macdonald’s “The Galton Case.”

In a career spanning 38 years, Silver has produced more than 70 movies, including some of the most successful and iconic of our times. He created box-office hits like the “Matrix” trilogy, ” the “Sherlock Holmes” series , the four-part “Lethal Weapon” series and many of the “Die Hard” and “Predator” movies, netting more than $14 billion at the box office worldwide.

Katz is the founder and Chairman of the Katz Group of companies, one of Canada’s largest privately owned enterprises, with operations in the pharmacy, sports and entertainment, and real estate development sectors.

Katz Group’s entertainment arm, Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG), delivers leading sports, entertainment and other special event programming to fans and patrons in Canada and the United States. The entertainment giant owns the 5-time Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers and will operate Rogers Place, the new home of the Oilers in downtown Edmonton. Under a new arrangement, Silver Pictures will expand OEG’s entertainment segment.

Next year, the company plans to move into the iconic location of the former U.S. Post Office in Venice, California. Silver has commission the restoration for the historic building and has been intimately involved with the renovation project. The California-based headquarters will serve as the state-of-the-art production office as well as screening room.

Silver Pictures is working on several projects with Universal Pictures, which include the remake of Sliver’s own 1985 film “Weird Science, ” and the famous stage and film musical “Gypsy, ” starring Barbra Streisand.

Silver Pictures’ recent co-production with Studio Canal include “Non-Stop” and “Unknown, ” both featuring Liam Neeson, cashing $352 million at the box office in total.
