Richard Dreyfuss is set to play Bernie Madoff in a new television movie for ABC about the man who ran the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.
Now the race is on as Robert De Niro is also developing a Madoff biopic for HBO, so let’s see which one airs first.

The Oscar winning Dreyfuss is no stranger to playing criminals, nor real life figures. 15 years ago he played the famed Jewish Gangster Meyer Lansky in a made for HBO biopic about the man. In 2001 he played the US Secretary of State Alexander Haig in a made for television docudrama about when president Raegan was shot in 1981. And he most famously played former Vice president Dick Cheney in Oliver Stone’s 2008 movie “W” about President George W Bush.
The new 4 hour long Madoff movie will be produced by Lincoln Square Productions and appear on ABC. It will be based on ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross’ book “The Madoff Chronicles: Inside the Secret World of Bernie and Ruth.
Even if all Dreyfuss gets out of this is an Emmy nomination he can certainly use any and all good exposure these days. When was the last time that he had a hit picture or that anyone said the words, “let’s go see that new Richard Dreyfuss movie?”
In the last ten years he has mostly done guest appearances on television shows like weeds and had small roles in box office duds like the remake of the Poseidon Adventure.
