Tom Steyer to Announce Senate Run ‘Pretty Soon’

Farallon Capital Management Founder Tom Steyer Interview

Tom Steyer has no regrets over spending $75 million towards environmental-oriented candidates during mid-term elections, even though the money resulted in very few victories. There is talk that Steyer might consider running for Barbara Boxer’s vacant seat, and that would be something California attorney general Kamala Harris would not want to see; if Steyer spent $75 million for other campaigns, even those that did not win, how much would he spend on his own?

Steyer paid for ad to run alongside President Obama’s State of the Union Address to deal with widespread myths many people used to believe, such as cigarettes were not dangerous, and compared these myths to denial of climate change. Steyer feels confident that there are fewer doubters about climate change than there were before.

When asked about a possible Senate run, Steyer told Los Angeles Times, “I haven’t made a decision yet. Either way, I’ll be working full time to find a solution to the problems I care most about.” He told Bloomberg that he would decide “Pretty soon, ” and he is telling supporters he will only run one term if he can’t achieve his objectives concerning the environment.

In polls, Kamala Harris has 27% support in a poll covering possible Democratic candidates for the Senate, with the nearest competitor not getting more than 10%. The San Francisco Chronicle said, “Steyer might not want to be the lone candidate trying to block the path of a charismatic woman of color. But if it is already a crowded field, that’s a different story.”

When asked by the Los Angeles Times makes Tom Steyer’s heavy campaign spending different from the Koch Brother’s donations, Steyer said, “We’re very different from the Koch brothers because we’re doing something we think is right and important. They may feel that what they are doing is right, but it definitely redounds to their benefit. Second, we’re trying hard to be transparent. They are not transparent. We feel we are going to win because we have the facts and right on our side. You don’t have to outspend somebody if that’s true.”
