Will Ralph Lauren’s new restaurant next to his flagship 5th avenue store be like the 21 club of old, constantly frequented by the biggest stars and socialites, as posited by the NYPost? Or was the guest only opening of the RL Grill just particularly star studded for the occasion, with Calvin Klein, Brooke Shields, Donna Karan and Glenda Bailey in attendance? Also present at the grand opening were Vanity Fair’s Grayson Carter, Tom Brokaw, David Gregory, along with Lizzie Tisch, Michael Bloomberg and Blackstone’s Stephen Schwartzman and his wife Christine.
Ralph Lauren, who was born in the Bronx and whose original name was Lipschitz, has decorated his restaurant with a casual and elegant equestrian theme, and on the menu are his favorite burgers, steaks, and a huge corned beef sandwich on marble rye.

Lauren told the New York Times, “I’m about longevity. I’m about timeless. It was not my idea to be trendy. I don’t want to be the hot restaurant. I want to be the restaurant you go to twice a week.”
While the modern diner might eschew a meat laden menu, or one that doesn’t feature the artistry of a big name chef, Ralph Lauren’s restaurant seems likely to attract a particular kind of diner.
Drew Nieporent, New York restaurateur, said, “I think there is a certain diner who will gravitate toward what he’s going to offer. If they launch this thing correctly, it could be a big winner in New York.”
