Sarah Palin caused a furore among animal rights activists and anyone who doesn’t believe in using family pets as step ladder, when she posted a Facebook picture on January 1st of her youngest child stepping on the family dog. Now she might get heat from Jewish groups as she revealed the dog is Jewish, or rather, has a Jewish name.
For Jewish Democrats, it is bad enough she is named Sarah, while Jewish Republicans argue that everyone makes gaffes now and again, and we should lay aside any petty satire of Palin, given her outspoken support for Israel.

The photo Sarah Palin posted, which attracted 70, 000 responses, was of her six year old Trig, who has Down’s Syndrome, standing on the Lab to get to the sink and wash dishes. Palin posted the caption, “May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward. Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for ‘up, ‘ found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone.”
The former governor of Alaska and Vice Presidential nominee received an instant torrent of criticism and defense. Some say this was evidence of Palin’s lack of concern for animal rights, while others said the dog would not have been hurt by a six year old standing on him. Other noted that Ellen Degeneres posted a similar photo of a child standing on the dog, and called out Palin’s detractors for liberal bias. Palin lashed out at her critics and with, “Dear PETA. Chill. At least Trig didn’t eat the dog.” It didn’t stop there as she went on a tirade against liberal hypocrisy, noting that people eat sushi and wear leather at Democratic functions.
Just when all that died down, Sarah tells us the dog has a Jewish name. Get ready for another round. I don’t think the ADL will get involved with this one, but let’s see if a storm erupts on social media before or after Shabbos. On the Today Show, Sarah Palin explained why she named the dog (who, on her Facebook status, was stepped on and who was described as ‘lazy’) Jill Hadassah. “I had a roomate in college named Jill, and then Hadassah, that’s a Jewish name for Esther. I love in the Bible the Book of Esther. I didn’t have a sixth kid, but had a dog, and I finally got to use those two names.”
One thing she forgot about Hadassah, or Esther. Esther was not the type of gal who would let herself be stepped on.
