It may send a shudder down your spine the first time you hear about it, but eating a placenta after birth is just what most other mammals do, and it has become a new celebrity healthy mom craze. Gaby Hoffman of Girls joins the ranks, which include Alicia Silverstone and Mayim Bialik, who have eaten placentas post-partum. Hoffman’s account, however, lets us in on the actual taste, “it doesn’t have a taste, ” and method–she ate it gradually by blending it up in smoothies.
Hoffman told People magazine that since she had a home birth, she told her doula to cut it up in 20 pieces and put it in the freezer. Then, every day, she put a piece of it in a blender with strawberries, blueberries guava juice and bananas, “and I just drank that shit up.”

Mayim Bialik explains that all mammals have a placenta for a reason. The placenta provides nutrients to the new mother and boosts milk supply. “I ingested my placenta, and I’m not a bad person, a crazy person or a freak and neither is Alicia Silverstone or January Jones, ” Bialik wrote in a post entitled “You’re not Gross.” She added, “Human beings are the only mammal that has chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta … which has protein and iron rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth.”
