Is Len Goodman’s Culinary Patriotism Just Xenophobia?

Len Goodman

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Len Goodman says he despises foreign food. This does not make him a xenophobe–he said nothing about people from other countries outside of his native England, but he is proud of the fact that he has never eaten spaghetti or curry.

He gets this tendency from his grandfather who told him to avoid foreign food. According to the List, Goodman said his grandfather gave him some advice, “Never eat anything you can’t spell and anything you wouldn’t want to tread in.” Well, I can’t imagine treading in blood pudding or toad in the hole, but we can get his drift.

Goodman obviously prefers cockles and mussels to sushi and says we would all be a lot healthier if we went back to the days of fish and chips.

Rumor has it that Goodman is leaving Strictly Come Dancing in 2015 after 9 years as head judge, and there is speculation about his replacement. According to Globe, Bruno Tonioli said he will resign if he isn’t given Goodman’s position. However, it is unlikely that he will succeed Goodman, as sights are being set on professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovsky to be the head judge. Maksim has the “feisty attitude” that can fill Goodman’s shoes, and even if Bruno resigns if he is passed over, Maksim is the likely candidate.
