Gary Barnett is likely to build yet another towering structure to downtown Manhattan, as reported by the Daily News. Barnett’s Extell Development company has just shelled out $45 million for a 52, 000 square foot parking facility at 251 W 45th street. It is expected that a large tower will be erected on the location, and many believe it will house a hotel, rather than luxury condos.

This could be Barnett’s tallest structure to date. Broker and analyst Robert Shapiro said, “This is not the right place for apartments. With these large floor plates, he’d be better off with a hotel or offices.”

Gary Barnett was born Gershon Swiatycki and was born in the lower East Side. His father Chaim was a rabbi and Talmudic scholar, and the family lived in Monsey, NY before Gershon became Gary and pursued a B.A. in Math from Queen’s college and an M.A. in Economics from Hunter College.
