She may face opposition from Democrats Kenneth Trujillo and Terry Gillen. State senator Hardy Williams is expected to announce his candidacy as well. There is not expected to be a meaningful Republican opponent since Philly is overwhelmingly Democratic. The current mayor, Michael Nutter, a Democrat, is not allowed to seek another term.
In her tenure, she has dealt with cases of Catholic archbishops accused of covering up child molestation, and she also convicted counterculture guru Ira Einhorn, who fled to Europe after murdering an ex girlfriend.
