Shipping Containers Solving Student Housing Needs in Southern Israel

Initiated by the Minister for the Development of the Negev and Galilee Silvan Shalom and Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Israel today launched an innovative residential complex in shipping containers, near the southern town of Sderot.

The first phase will establish some 36 housing units for about 80 students from Sapir College, Later another 127 units will be added, housing some 220 students.

Shipping containers are being utilized for housing today in France, Britain, Chile and New Zealand.

The Ministry for the Development of the Negev and Galilee has budgeted roughly $3 million for the project, with the NGO Ayalim contributing another $6 million.
