James Iovine and Dr. Dre Sue Roam for Cashing in on Beats Earphone Reputation

Record and film producer James Iovine and Dr. Dre developed the Beats earphone brand that was sold to Apple in August. A month later, Roam released an earphone called Rope, raising once again claims that Rope’s founder Steven Lamar of Jibe Audio, “was responsible for the concept, design, manufacturing and distribution of Beats by Dr. Dre headphone line, ” according to Courthouse News Service.

Iovine and Dr. Dre claim that Lamar is reviving these old and, as they claim, spurious complaints to drive publicity for the release of Rope. While Lamar did have a connection with the two in 2006 while Beats was in the development stage, all agreements fell apart when Lamar breached an oral agreement. Iovine and Dr. Dre requested that Lamar remove any allegations from his tweets and publicity. While there was a settlement on April 4, 2014, the issue has been revived as Lamar has repeated these claims in connection with Apple’s buyout of Beats and the release of Lamar’s new product on September 4. Beats is currently asking for an injunction for damages and false advertising.
