Billionaire Paul Singer, called a “vulture” by Argentina’s President Christina Kirchner for demanding the troubled country, which defaulted last month, pay him back in full, is hiring high-profile Carlos Gutierrez to lobby for him in Argentina. Gutierrez , former Secretary State Madeleine Albright’s co-chair and former U.S. Commerce Secretary, is joining the team to ensure that Singer is paid in full, despite the default.
Kirchner sent a bill to avoid the U.S. order to pay Singer, while proposing an agreement to go ahead and pay those those who swapped into bonds at a substantial haircut. The politicians in Argentina who argue against the bill are accused of having political backing, and the leadership smells a conspiracy, or so it believes, with Singer’s name written all over it.
