According to reports, Khodorkovskaya died surrounded by family members, including son Mikhail, in a Berlin clinic.
She suffered from cancer for many years.
After 10 years in jail, Khodorkovsky, a founder of Russia’s formerly biggest oil company Yukos, pleaded with President Vladimir Putin last year to release him, in light of his mother’s illness.
Putin freed Khodorkovsky on Dec. 20, 2013.
Immediately following his release, Khodorkovsky flew to meet his mother to Berlin.
“Time stopped for me on Oct. 25, 2003 [the day her son was arrested], ” Marina Khodorkovskaya told the Khodorkovsky.ru website, back in 2011. “My life has become a nightmare. I only wish I could live long enough to see his release.”
Mikhail Khodorkovsky today resides in Switzerland.
