Whether a fan of the movies or not, someone would pretty much have had to live in a cage for the last 37 tears not to know about Star Wars. Fans of the George Lucas science fiction/fantasy movies run the gamut from people who enjoyed watching them to those who have made it into a quasi-religion. Be careful with any negative comments about the second set of three films in the series if you are around a member of the latter group.
Also, if you ever go on line or just follow the news in passing then you have certainly heard that Mr. Lucas has passed the torch to a new generation of filmmakers. Science fiction television producer J.J. Abrams who gave the world such shows as Lost and Fringe and who recently rebooted the Star Trek franchise was tapped to helm the seventh Star Wars movie.
Now comes word that the second generation of Star Wars actors will appear in the new film as the daughter of Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the first three movies, has been cast in it. The 22 year old Billie Lourd who has no previous acting credits is reported to have been given the role of a young Princess Leia in flashback sequences. Her mother, Fisher, already signed on a long time ago to reprise her role as Lea, but as an adult thirty years after the events in the third film, Return of the Jedi, which came out in 1983 and was the last one that she appeared in.
When the first Star Wars movie premiered in 1977, the then 21 year old Fisher was also a new actress, having had only one small role in a picture before that. At the time she was best known for being the daughter of famous Hollywood celebrities Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher.
Carrie Fisher will be reunited with her costars from the original films, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. The new movie is currently being filmed at Pinewood Studios in England.
Since her portrayal of Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars movies, Carrie Fisher has gone on to appear in more than 80 television shows and films, including the Blues Brothers and Family Guy. She also wrote and performed in her own one-woman play Wishful Drinking which premiered in 2006. Fisher was famously once married to Paul Simon.
She is also the author of four novels, including the semi-autobiographical Postcards from the Edge, which was made into a movie starring Meryl Streep in 1990.
J.J. Abrams was born in 1966 in New York and raised in Los Angeles. He grew up wanting to make movies and got his start at the age of sixteen when he wrote the music for the movie Nightbeast. His first writing credit came at the age of 24 when a story that he wrote became the basis for the movie Taking Care of Business.
Abrams’ first television show was Felicity about a young girl fresh out of high school. His break out program was Alias, which starred Jennifer Garner as a tough, highly trained CIA agent with some supernatural elements thrown in. Then there was lost which premiered in 2004. Again Abrams showed his trademark for blending realism with the supernatural in this show about a group of survivors of a plane which crashed on a remote uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific where many strange things occurred.
