Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss had promised “the best finale to date”, and most viewers would arguably agree that they indeed delivered. Game of Thrones’ season finale, which in previous seasons served as a fairly subdued cathartic installment following the monumental happenings of the episodes preceding it, offered numerous turning points and major plot developments this time around, in an over-an-hour-long captivating, epic, well-crafted and shocking episode, which brought in 7.1 million viewers in the US alone in its initial airing.
To celebrate the record breaking season, which averaged 6.8 million viewers – 37 percent more than the previous one – and turned Game of Thrones into the most watched show in HBO’s history, we present the ten most crucial moments – one from each episode – that helped make that happen.
Warning: Contains major spoilers.

Episode 4.1: Arya reunites with her Needle
Arya’s gruesome, yet chillingly casual slaying of the man who killed her friend was sure enough a true game-changing moment. While justifiable, it was done in such striking cold-hearted manner and with undeniable apparent malice, that we couldn’t help wondering where the former sweet, innocent child’s path would be leading her – along with her newly-reclaimed petite, yet deadly sword – as her tale keeps unfolding.
