Jon Steinberg has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for North America for MailOnline, which is a newly created position within the international publishing conglomerate, DMG Media, part of Associated Newspapers Ltd group.
Steinberg will be joining MailOnline North America effective immediately from Buzzfeed where he held the joint posts of President and Chief Operating Officer from 2010.
MailOnline is the world’s largest English language online newspaper, reaching close to two hundred million unique web browsers a month globally, although holding second place in the U.S., behind the New York Times.
Announcing Steinberg‘s appointment, MailOnline Publisher Martin Clark emphasized his delight by stating that Jon is the perfect person to lead the charge as we grow and mature as a product in the US and also to help us expand globally, coming to the company with an amazing track record, as one of the key people who has made Buzzfeed such a success story in recent years.
In response, Steinberg stated that he had long been impressed by the MailOnline’s exponential growth as well as being a huge fan of the editorial content, which in his opinion is second to none when it comes to covering such sectors as entertainment, breaking news and feature stories of the day that matter.
Jon Steinberg graduated from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs going on to gain an MBA from Columbia University.
After graduation, Steinberg held senior positions at DeMatteo Monness, Majestic Research and Booz Allen Hamilton before switching to the digital media sector, initially as Strategic Partner Development Manager with responsibility for Local Markets at Google where he worked from 2007 to 2009, later joining Polaris Venture Partners, where he served as Executive Entrepreneur in Residence.
In 2010, Jon joined Buzzfeed while it was in the earliest stages of its development, being the company’s 15th employee, During his time with company, where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for business management, company operations, finance, and social advertising operations.
During his time incharge, Buzzfeed grew in leaps and bounds, eventually employing more than 500 employees, making considerable in the social advertising sector, servicing fifty the world’s top 100 brands while establishing business development partnerships with the leading players, in particular Facebook, Google, WhatsApp and YouTube.
