Israel is renowned for its innovations in the world of high tech. As a result, it is only natural that major corporations would go there to look for help when they develop new systems or new hardware to compete with Giants such as Microsoft or Google.

Epson, the Japanese company which is now competing with Google Glass,  unveiled its Moverio BT-200 glasses to the Israeli market at the Droidcon 2014 convention for Android mobile platform developers in Tel Aviv last Wednesday. The company is currently recruiting Israeli app developers to create new apps for the glasses.

Epson says of the Moviero, that it listened to the feedback from its customers, and so the new product deserves the title, “Next Generation.” Featuring lighter, smaller glasses with a host of technological improvements, the Moverio BT-200 enables the development of innovative applications.

The Moviero weighs only 88 grams and has many sensors and imaging components that project onto the glasses what could otherwise be seen on Android devices. Its users can watch videos, surf the web or see all sorts of text from email or Twitter posts through the glasses as they go about their daily business. The glasses are connected to mobile devices with Bluetooth.

As with tablets, any new mobile connected glasses will be more competitive based on the number of apps that they can offer their users.

Epson Europe’s vice president, Valerie Riffaud-Cangelos, said at Droidcon, “We’ve spoken to representatives of many industries who are interested in these glasses, and we are working with partners to develop apps for them. Some of these apps are being developed by Israeli partners.”

Epson is currently reaching out to Israeli app developers to reach agreements with them for the development of new ways in which its Moviero can be integrated with mobile devices. According to Epson Israel’s Chief Executive Officer, Oren Fleischer, a few Israeli companies are already working with Epson and more Israeli firms are expected to sign on with Epson in the near future.

Fleischer said that, “This device is a glimpse of the future that awaits us all. Wearable computing is a hot business today. Experts believe that the current $8 billion market for AR technology will grow to $17 billion by 2017. Epson wants to be a part of that, and it sees Israel as integral to that effort.”

First held in 2009 in Berlin, Droidcon is a European conference for the Android community where people can learn about the latest developments and that gives participants a stage to talk about their apps and solutions or to just discuss a problem that they may be facing. Droidcon states that it is about how businesses are increasingly utilizing Android and how companies and freelance developers can make money from Android devices. Droidcon is a platform for the discussion of cutting edge technology in the Android field.

Droidcon’s first convention in Tel Aviv was actually held at the YesPlanet in the city of Rishon Lezion on June11-12. More than 600 people participated in the conference. Speakers included representatives from companies such as Microsoft, Sony and Intel as well as many Israeli businesses.
