With the ink still drying on David Letterman’s letter to CBS  announcing that he would be leaving the show he has hosted for more than twenty years, the list of possible candidates to replace him is already beginning to take shape.

Figuring prominently on that list is none other than Chelsea Handler,  of the E! Talk and “Chelsea Lately” shows who is reportedly  involved in talks with CBS regarding the possibility of her hosting a  late-night talk show with him, although it is not for sure that the talks are around the Late Show slot.

When the news that  Chelsea would be leaving her slot on E! Talk  at the end of March, CBS was reported  to be interested in her services, in an entirely different scenario, or with some people even suggesting as a possible replacement  for  Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show, which holds the less prime time 12:30 a.m. slot, with an audience that may better appreciate Ms. Handler’s sometime outrageous sense of humor.

If  Chelsea were to take on the The Late Late Show she would be the first woman to take on a  late-night hosting spot since Cynthia Garrett held the fort on  “Later” for  NBC during  2000 and 2001.

At the moment, at least on the face of things at CBS, it seems like a simple case of musical chairs when Letterman does leave the set, with Craig Ferguson have contractual  first refusal for the Letterman spot, with Chelsea coming in to replace him on the Late, Late Show.  However, there may be not one, but two flies in the ointment with that particular scenario- First of all, Ferguson’s struggling in the ratings war  against Seth Meyers,  who recently replaced Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s Late Night , when  Fallon replaced Jay Leno on the Tonight Show.

The other fly, and reportedly a substantially larger one, is that Chelsea Handler is said to be much  more interested in taking on  the Late Show than the Late, Late Show and not just because she can get to go home earlier, and more for the considerably larger audience and undoubtedly more stimulating guest list she will be handling.

Chelsea Handler has become particularly well known over the last few years as the host of “Chelsea Lately, ” he five-time weekly E! Television’s late night talk show.  Chelsea has been hosting the  late-night comedy show since July 2007 during which time it has gained not only an American but also an international audience.

Chelsea Lately has consistently averaged in excess of  a half-million viewers since its premiere in 2007, making it one of the most popular late night cable shows, broadcast daily on the E! Network not only in the U.S., but also in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand  and Germany.

In addition, the best clips drawn from Chelsea Lately regularly top the one million viewer mark on YouTube.
