2014 Winter TCA Tour - Day 1

Lena Dunham has been signed up by  Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the recently appointed chief creative officer at Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer to work on  Archies comic books, with four issues coming from the talented writer sometime next year.

Lena was tapped by Aguirre-Sacasa when news reached him that the “Girls” star had been discussing with J. J. Abrams,  director  of Star Wars Episode VII,  about her lifelong affection for the comic book characters, having collected some limited editions and even having gone as far as attending the annual conventions staged by Archie comics.

Abrams,  a close personal friend of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa suggested that someone with as much talent and creative ability as Lena would be an asset and  they should consider taking her on board.

Aguirre-Sacasa didn’t take too long the suggestion put that suggestion to Jon Goldwater, the publisher and co-chief executive of Archie, that she  should be sounded out to bring her writing skills and modern concepts to the cartoon family who have been appearing in print as well as on the television screen since the early 1940s, with the original “Archie”or to give him his full title, Archibald “Chick” Andrews always being a feature player alongside.

Announcing the project Jon Goldwater reveals that when he discovered that Lena was a fan of the series, he told Roberto to make it happen, which is exactly what he has done.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that the entire crew at Archie are thrilled about Lenas coming aboard to write this story, with early concept discussions pointing to what looks like being a fantastic working relationship.  “Lena’s take on the Archie gang is funny and real and contemporary. It’s a stunning fit, and I know fans will be excited to read it. I am!” Aguirre-Sacasa enthused

Lena Dunham confirmed her delight at the opportunity to write about not only about Archie, but all of the characters in the series, which  is the fulfillment of a childhood dream which not only has so much cultural significance but also so much personal significance. “To get to play with these beloved characters is a wild, creative opportunity.” Lena summed up.
