As was widely expected Spike Jonze show off the challenges of screenplay writing veterans David O Russell and Woody Allen in the original screenplay category to win his debut Oscar for his futuristic romance movie entitled simply “Her“.
“Her” featured rising star Joaquin Phoenix in a real human role as Theodore Twombly while the movie audience, can only hear but not see Scarlett Johansson, who played the voice-only role of Samantha, who communicates through his computer’s operating system.
Spike Jonze’s “Her”, which portrays a scenario which could ostensibly occur in the not not-too-distant future when vocal communication between computers, tablets and smart phones and the people who own them will become fairly commonplace. In his innovative movie, Jonze takes a trip down fantasy lane through exploring a possible romantic relationship between a voice driven computer program, and a human being, taking the situation as far as it can go, by portraying “Samantha” beginning to build up feelings of emotion, as well as a desire to take on the human shape to expand her relationship with the hapless Theodore Twombly.
Jonze not only wrote the screenplay for Her , but also directed it, as well as co-writing along with well-known pop singer Karen O “The Moon Song, ” which featured in the movie, and was also received a nomination for the best original song.
In addition to his Oscar for best original screenplay for Her, 2014 has been a pretty good year altogether so far for Spike Jones, seeing him winning also the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay as well as the the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay.
This is the second time that Spike Jonze has been nominated for an Oscar in his career, with the first nomination coming in 2000, for best director for the film “Being John Malkovich”.
