David Renzer has joined the independent music publisher, the Spirit Music Group as chairman.
Renzer has reportedly been brought in by Spirit to be more than a figurehead, but instead to take an active role in all areas of the independent publisher’s activities, particularly to work in close cooperation with Spirit’s financial partners, strengthen their global platform as well as overseeing development of new media initiatives for the company.
David Renzer pointed out that what attracted him to Spirit Music this achievement in quietly built up one of the finest owned catalogs, including that of Pete Townshend, Marc Bolan and Alan and Marilyn Bergman catalogs, among a long list of celebrated songwriter portfolios.
“The other thing that is interesting about Spirit is they have done very well signing young artists to deals early on and then managing to achieve synchronization opportunities for many of them.” Renzer summarized
Renzer who will be spreading his time between the publisher’s New York and Los Angeles offices, announced the company’s goal which is expanding activities of Spirit Music Publishing until it destroys its current size. This will be done through a series of planned acquisitions as well as increasing the number of signings that the company will make in the coming years, targeting in particular contemporary artists, songwriters as well as producers.
David Renzer will be working closely with Mark Fried who founded Spirit Music in 1995 Fried will continue in his position as President and CEO, with one of their first joint projects will be managing the 50th anniversary celebrations of Pete Townshend’s body of work with the Who.
The current Spirit catalog, includes songs by such classic pop artists as Chicago, Chaka Khan, Charles Minges, the Grateful Dead, Lou Christie meaning to the current wave of young and talented songwriters, artists and producers.

After graduating from New York University, Renzer began his professional career at Zomba Music Publishing where he was to remain for 10 years and eventually becoming become Senior Vice President and General Manager.
In 1996, David Renzer left Zomba Music Publishing to join Universal Music Publishing who were then MCA Music Publishing, Renzer was responsible for the successful integration of Polygram Music Publishing as well as the Rondor Music catalogue into the Universal Music Publishing family, signing a number of the world’s leading most songwriters to the company as well as acquiring over 100 music catalogs, included those of Elton John/Bernie Taupin, Eminem, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi as well as from the renowned Motown writers Holland Dozier Holland and the Henry Mancini catalogs.
Renzer served as both Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group from late 2004 until he left the company in 2013, responsible for overseeing the company’s growth until they operated more than 50 offices around the globe.
During his many years in the music publishing industry, David Renzer has served on the Board of American Society Of Composers, Authors & Publishers, the National Music Publishers’ Association as well as on the Executive Board of the City of Hope Music and Entertainment Industry Chapter, where he was responsible for establishing their annual Songs of Hope Celebrity Sheet Music Auction.
