Not too many people in the film industry were surprised when David O. Russell’s crime comedy movie American Hustle picked up no less than 10 nominations for this year’s Oscars, including strong candidates for each of the four leading acting categories, Christian Bale for best male actor in a leading role, Amy Adams for best female actor in a leading role, with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper looking strong favorites for the support actor’s Oscars.
Last year Russell picked up eight nominations for Silver Linings Playbook, a romantic comedy-drama film which he also wrote the screenplay for as well as directed. Silver Linings Playbook, which also starred Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, saw them both pick up Oscar nominations.
According to a statement issued by SBIFF, David has been chosen to be given this years award thanks to his abilities both as a writer as well as a director, and simply not being afraid to push the envelope in the cinematic world.” He has the eye for the picture he wants to present and then does so, with an expertise that is as bold as it is a joy to watch.” the statement summed up.
