Bernie Marcus, who is now 84 years old, became a billionaire by founding Home Depot, and building it up to become one of America’s leading big box store chains, a concept which he then took international as well.
After retiring from the Chairman’s office of Home Depot in 2002 Bernie has focused heavily on philanthropy, through The Marcus Foundation Inc. and also, specifically, directly helping those who are autistic with the Marcus Autism Center.
Home base for Bernie in Atlanta hasn’t been in a big box however, indeed far from it. His home in Atlanta has just gone up for sale through Sotheby’s International real estate for a listed price of US$3.2 million, and it is a very comfortable, though far from “billionaireishly” opulent, mansion indeed.

For your US$3.2 million you will get a very stylish, though not to everybody’s taste, 10, 000 square-foot estate near Sandy Springs in Atlanta Georgia, which includes a heated driveway for when it snows…in Atlanta? Built in 1987 the house still looks quite new with clean but conventional lines, southwestern undertones and plenty of open space inside as well as outside in the capacious grounds.

It is smaller on the inside than it looks on the outside however, so it has a relatively modest five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
Sotheby’s references the two-story living room, a lovely indoor swimming pool for serious lap timers, the obligatory wine cellar and a newly described, ecumenical, spiritual or prayer room.

In the view of the Atlanta edition of the real estate magazine Curbed, however, one of the most intriguing items in the whole house is what it calls a “Warhol-esque” portrait of Bernie Marcus himself, sitting in the spot where one can readily fantasize that some of his best business deals were cut.

Property records apparently indicate the property (likely the land only at that time) sold for just $260, 000 back in 1985, and so far it is still looking pretty good.
