Natalie Portman presented the famed Israeli author Amos Oz with the UCLA Israel Studies Award from the UCLA Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies. The 33 year old Oscar winning actress is making a movie about the writer’s life for her directorial debut.
Oz received the award at the 2015 fundraising gala, held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

The UCLA Israel Studies Award, which comes with a $10, 000 prize, was created to recognize individuals of extraordinary character and merit in their chosen fields — whether in academia, public service, business, or the arts — who have contributed to a greater understanding of Israel or have made outstanding contributions to Israeli society and/or culture. The prize has been awarded previously only once, to former President (Chief Justice) of the Supreme Court of Israel Aharon Barak in 2007.
Portman’s new movie, “A Tale Of Love And Darkness, ” is about Oz’s life and is based on his 2002 memoir of the same name. It will soon premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Amos Oz is the author of 14 novels and collections of short fiction, as well as numerous works of nonfiction, and is a regular commentator in the Israeli and world press. His many novels have been translated into 43 languages and include the titles My Michael (1968), The Hill of Evil Counsel (1976), A Perfect Peace (1982), Panther in the Basement (1995), Scenes from Village Life (2009), and Judas (2014). Oz’s acclaimed memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness (2002), has sold over a million copies worldwide.
