Not due out until this Friday, an early release in 44 places around the world have netted the film $201.2 Million. France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Korea and Australia have all been blessed with an early release ahead of the United States. Americans will still have to wait another 4 days to see it.
This comes to a 44% increase over the money earned by the first Avengers film. It also set a record for the largest IMAX release at $10.4 million or a per screen average of more than $60, 000.
It set a record for the biggest opening weekend ever in Korea taking in $28 million and 91% of all movie tickets sold there over the weekend. It brought in $27.3 million in England and Ireland combined.
The gross far exceeded the expectations of Disney’s Marvel Studios which had only predicted to take in up to $175 million.
Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis commented, “The bar was high, but this is a sign of unbelievable momentum in the marketplace. It all goes back to the strength of the brand and the incredible work the Marvel team does in telling stories in such a consistent way and creating these worlds.”
He added that Marvel has “taken storytelling in every movie since the first Avengers and elevated it. This result is a testament to a lot of work that happens in between releases.”
The movie centers on the story of how a super powerful computer called Ultron, designed by Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) AKA Ironman, tries to destroy the world. Apparently the computer was intended to bring peace but then goes nuts and turns into a super villain.
Comic book geeks worldwide will be watching closely to see if the sequel to 2012’s monster hit, helmed again by Joss Whedon, remains faithful to its source material. Everyone else will just be watching closely to see Johansson jump around in a tight black body suit. For the ladies there will be Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans as Captain America.
