It opens with Crystal’s co-star Josh Gad telling the camera, “Comedy is like heart surgery. It gets botched all the time.”
Crystal then says of his co-star’s character, “He’s like a St. Bernard puppy. He’s easily distracted.”
Crystal then asks, “Why does his dresser always smell like ham?” Cut to a shot of Gad guzzling down pieces of ham like a ravenous dog.
We then get to see Gad get raped by a bear, maybe.
In the new show, which will have 13 episodes, Billy Crystal plays a comedy legend who is reluctantly paired with Josh Gad, an edgier up-and-coming star, in an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes look at a fictional late night sketch comedy show where egos and generations collide.
Stephnie Weir stars as “Kristen Laybourne, ” the anxiety-ridden producer behind The Billy & Josh Show who frequently finds herself caught in the middle of Billy and Josh’s arguments, Matt Oberg stars as “Mitch Reed, ” the show’s head writer, and Megan Ferguson stars as “Esme McCauley, ” a no-nonsense production assistant. Together they spend most of their time managing the egos of their two stars and the generational divide that keeps them from ever fully seeing eye-to-eye.
Larry Charles (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld), Matt Nix (Burn Notice), and Ben Wexler (Community, Arrested Development) are Writers and Executive Producers of The Comedians, along with Crystal. Charles directed the pilot. Josh Gad is serving as Producer. The half-hour, single-camera comedy is produced by Fox Television Studios.
The Comedians will premiere on the same day as the fifth season of Louie, Thursday April 9th. The show will air at 10 PM followed by Louie at 10:30.
Legendary directors Rob Reiner and Mel Brooks have been booked to appear on the new cable series.
Other guest stars on the show will include Jimmy Kimmel and Steven Webber.
