WhatsApp is getting ready to offer its new voice calling service with Android and iOS devices and is currently beta testing it with a select group of people. At the same time a video of a gang rape went viral on WhatsApp and helped lead to the rapists’ arrest.
Sunitha Krishnan, a women’s rights activist who runs an NGO in Hyderabad, is credited with having discovered the video which has been removed from YouTube.

“Ten seconds into the video, I was overcome. I had to stop as I needed to throw up, ” she told NDTV. Krishnan also told CNN-IBN, “Yesterday I started a campaign against these rapists requesting all the people to trace them. Soon after that my car was attacked.”
The six month old video reveled the faces of the rapists while covering the victim’s image to protect her privacy.
Krishnan posted on her Facebook page, “If you know of anybody who has received any such videos, inform me at [email protected]. I don’t know how many people saw these videos and remained silent. WE WILL NOT.”
Meanwhile the hype continues over WhatsApps new calling feature which was first revealed by the company’s CEO Jan Koum last year. It will be simple to use. An icon for voice calls will appear next to a contact’s information.
Once it comes into wide use and be copied by just about everybody else, from Apple to Microsoft, from Google to Amazon, cell phone companies will become an endangered species.
When WI fi access everywhere becomes as common as Starbucks no one will need to pay for mobile telephone services any longer.
