President Obama, Jack Lew Threaten Even Tighter Sanctions against North Korea

President Obama walks with White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew on the South Lawn of the White House.

There are already heavy sanctions against North Korea, but according to President Obama and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, they are going to get a lot worse, according to In the Capital. In the aftermath of North Korea hacking Sony emails that made public sensitive information and cost the company $100 million, Obama called on stiffer penalties which will be determined by the State Department and the Treasury Department. The hacking was the result of North Korea’s wrath over the release of the film “The Interview” which depicts an assassination attempt against North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

“Today’s actions are driven by our commitment to hold North Korea responsible for its destructive and destabilizing conduct, ” said Secretary Lew, who added that the FBI is doing an investigation and the plan is to employ “a broad set of tools to defend U.S. businesses and citizens.”

A report identifies 10 North Koreans living abroad and 3 government agencies in the country under investigation. The current sanctions are already severe, and it is uncertain how new sanctions will make a dent. However, the President indicated that sanctions will be a first step.
