Glenn Greenwald Rips Media’s Lackluster Reporting on US Torture

glenn greenwald

A lot has been reported in the media about the U.S. Senate’s Intelligence Committee’s report on the use of torture by the CIA. Not only is the journalist Glenn Greenwald unhappy with how the media has dealt with the issue of torture but he also thinks that former U.S. President Dick Cheney should be in prison.

Greenwald sat down for an interview with the Huffington Post’s Alyona Minkovski, during which he accused his peers in the American media of bias in favor of the U.S. government on the torture issue saying, “They’re extremely subjective and biased on the side of the U.S. government while feigning these pretenses of neutrality.”

He added, “[The media’s] justification for this is, ‘Well, it’s not up for us to resolve debates. We just report what one side says, what the other side says and leave it at that.’ And yet they don’t show all sides, as evidenced by … [the fact that] we don’t hear from the victims of torture, because to hear from them would be too illuminating about what our government does, and so the U.S. media purposely and systematically suppresses that side.”

He also lamented the fact that Dick Cheney is allowed to appear on news programs like Meet The Press to defend the practice of torture while not being held accountable for his culpability in it.

Greenwald said, “The reason why Dick Cheney is able to go on ‘Meet the Press’ instead of where he should be – which is in a dock in the Hague or in a federal prison – is because President Obama and his administration made the decision not to prosecute any of the people who implemented this torture regime despite the fact that it was illegal and criminal.”
