Neri Oxman of MIT has joined forces with 3D printing company Stratasys to develop four varieties of “wearable skins” that would potentially enable human beings to survive on other planets in conditions that would otherwise be fatal, according to DeZeen.

The project, called Wanderers: An Astrobiological Exploration are small habitats worn on the body. Oxman said, “The future of wearables lies in designing augmented extensions to our own bodies that will blur the boundary between the environment and ourselves.”
He explained, “Living matter within these structures will ultimately transform oxygen for breathing, photons for seeing, biomass for eating, biofuels for moving and calcium for building.”
Many of these strange items could be worn as very funky accessories here on Earth, perhaps. Or maybe they are better left for space, the final fashion frontier.
